Web Site Digression

June 24th, 2010 by Eric Berna

I wasn’t happy with this website.  I needed this site to do more work with less effort from me.  So I took a week off of iOS development, and focused instead on redeveloping this website.

On day one I considered my options.  Well, not all of my options.  There are so many ways to build a website now that I could spend months considering options.  I just spent an evening considering options.  I wanted a system that is easy to edit from anywhere. I also wanted to avoid a steep learning curve.  I chose WordPress, because I was already comfortable using it, and I knew it could fit my needs.

The next four days I learned how to customize WordPress themes.  I had a particular look I wanted for the website, and that look didn’t match any WordPress themes I’ve seen.  Yet I didn’t know how to develop WordPress themes, and I had a lot to learn.  I’ve done some XHTML/CSS work and extensive computer science study, so I wasn’t starting from first principles.  After reading some of the documentation at wordpress.org and a nice tutorial at themeshaper.com, I knew my level of incompetence with WordPress theme development.  I knew I could make that particular look in another week or two of my development time.  I also knew developing a custom theme would cost too much time.

So I sacrificed the ideal site in my mind for a good site I could accomplish in a few days. I gave up on trying to develop my own ideal theme. With an open mind, I browsed the available free WordPress themes and chose one I liked.  Then I went about customizing and improving it, tweaking many of the details I didn’t like.  In two more days, this site went live, and I got back to iOS development.

What’s your opinion of the new website?
